Saratoga Knights of Columbus at 50 Pine Road, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866 US - Members' Area last update:  February 3

Members' Area
last update:  February 3

Ash Wednesday this year falls on February 22. Along with Good Friday, it is a day of strict fast and abstinence.

Lent is defined as the 40-day liturgical season of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving in preparation for Easter. By the way, Lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon word “lencton,” which means spring. Lent is portrayed as a journey—going from one place to another, namely, from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday. The Council of Nicea, in the year 325, set Lent as 40 days, an imitation of Jesus in the desert where He fasted for 40 days.

Lent is a time to take a good look at ourselves, a deep examination of conscience. We are asked to reflect on the things that are keeping us from being closer to God. We are creatures of habit. We can get into a rut very easily. Lent is a time to stop and take a deep breath, to smell the roses and to see the wonders of God’s creation. We are called to ask ourselves, “How is my spiritual journey going?” “How is my prayer life?” “Am I aware of the needs of others?”

Taking advantage of the wonderful sacrament of confession is an important part of a good Lenten season. “Confession heals, confession justifies, confession grants pardon of sin, all hope consists in confession; in confession there is a chance for mercy.” —St. Isadore of Seville.

What is repentance? It is our sorrow for sin and turning to God, conversion and changing of attitude. John the Baptist preached repentance. Jesus came to call sinners to repentance (MK 1:15).

A good practice in Lent is to make daily mass as often as possible. Also, a once very popular devotion, the Stations of the Cross, are available on Fridays during Lent.

Friday, February 3, is St. Blaise’s day, a chance to get our throats blessed.

E-mail Addresses

I have an e-mailing list of approximately 80 members. I use this list to pass
along notices and items of interest that are given to me regarding Council activities and events. Many of these members have also agreed to receive their dues billing via e-mail (a much more efficient process for me).

If you would like to be on this e-mailing list, please send me your e-mail address with a note to that effect. (Botondick@aol.com). Please also note if you would like to receive your dues billing via e-mail.
